How to Rename a File in an S3 Bucket on AIOZ Storage

If you search for how to rename a file in an S3 bucket, many of the answers explain that S3 has no rename button. AWS's own documentation describes general purpose buckets as a flat structure, and the one native RenameObject operation it documents works only for directory buckets that use the S3 Express One Zone storage class. AIOZ Storage's dashboard takes a more direct route for files: a Rename action in the file menu. This guide covers that and the other file and bucket actions the AIOZ docs describe, with the unsupported ones listed up front so you do not find them out halfway through a clean-up.

TL;DR:

  • A file's three-dot menu in the bucket detail page has Rename, Move to folder, Delete and Download.
  • The docs state that renaming folders, downloading folders and renaming buckets are not supported.
  • A bucket can be deleted only when it is empty, and deletion cannot be undone. A folder can be deleted even if it has files in it.
  • Buckets are private by default. Choosing Public, with your passphrase, gives the bucket a URL and a path.

How Do You Rename a File in an AIOZ Storage Bucket?

Open the bucket, click the three-dot button on the right side of the file, choose Rename, type the new name and click Confirm. Renaming works for files. The docs say that renaming folders is not supported.

A two-column card listing the actions the AIOZ Storage docs support, such as renaming a file, and those they do not, such as renaming a folder or bucket

In full, the steps are:

  1. Log in to the dashboard and open the bucket from the Buckets page. A bucket opens with its passphrase, which AIOZ does not store, so keep it to hand.
  2. On the Bucket detail page, click the three-dot button at the right of the file.
  3. Choose Rename, enter the new name, and click Confirm.

AIOZ does not document how the rename is carried out, for example whether the file is copied or moved in place.

Why S3 Has No Rename, and Where AIOZ Differs

In Amazon S3 general purpose buckets, AWS says, objects are stored in a flat structure instead of a hierarchy like a file system. The console shows folders by grouping objects that share a name prefix, and AWS notes that folders can be created, deleted and made public, but not renamed. The RenameObject operation AWS documents is limited to objects stored in S3 Express One Zone directory buckets.

The AIOZ docs describe the dashboard actions only. Rename is listed for files, and the pages state that renaming folders and buckets is not supported. No S3 API call for renaming is documented, so if you need to rename through the API rather than the dashboard, check with AIOZ before building on it.

Move a File to Another Folder

  1. Open the file's three-dot menu on the Bucket detail page.
  2. Choose Move to folder and pick the destination folder.
  3. Click Select to confirm.

The destination folder has to exist already. The docs do not describe creating a folder as part of the move, so create it first.

Delete Files, Folders, and Buckets

To delete a file or folder, open the three-dot menu on the Bucket detail page, choose Delete, and click Submit. A folder does not need to be empty to be deleted.

Deleting a bucket is stricter. On the Buckets page, click the three-dot button at the right of the bucket, choose Delete, and confirm with Submit. Two conditions from the docs apply:

  • The bucket must be empty, with no objects inside.
  • Deletion cannot be undone.

AWS has a similar rule for its own buckets: general purpose buckets must be empty before deletion, and a deleted bucket cannot be restored by AWS. AWS adds a warning about names, because bucket names are unique in a global namespace and another account can later reuse a name you released. AIOZ's docs also say bucket names are globally unique, but they do not say what happens to a name after deletion.

Download Files

Open the file's action menu on the Bucket detail page and select Download. The file is saved to your device's default download directory. The docs say that downloading folders is not supported and describe no dashboard route for it. AIOZ documents the AWS CLI and SDKs separately.

Make a Bucket Public or Private

Buckets are private by default. To share one, open its action menu, choose Public, enter your passphrase and click Submit. A public bucket provides a bucket URL and a bucket path. To reverse it, choose Private and confirm.

Treat Public as a deliberate step. A public bucket is reachable through its URL, so check what is inside before you switch it on. AWS gives similar advice for its own buckets, recommending that public access stay blocked unless you specifically need it.

What Is Not Supported

Collected from the Manage Objects and Manage Buckets pages:

  • Renaming folders.
  • Downloading folders.
  • Renaming buckets. The docs say update actions, including renaming, are not currently supported.
  • Deleting a bucket that still contains objects.

One related detail from the Manage Buckets page: to create a bucket through the S3 API, your S3 credentials need create permission for all buckets. In the dashboard, that means selecting All Buckets in the bucket selection step when you create the credentials.

The missing folder rename follows from how S3-style storage works: keys are flat strings, and a "folder" is a display convention. What Is Amazon S3? Object Storage, Fully Explained covers that model. If you script these actions instead of using the dashboard, AIOZ Storage CLI Quickstart: AWS CLI with a Custom Endpoint shows how the AWS CLI works against AIOZ's endpoint, including copying objects.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I rename a file in an AIOZ Storage bucket?
Open the bucket detail page, click the three-dot button beside the file, choose Rename, enter the new name and click Confirm.

Can I rename a folder in AIOZ Storage?
No. The docs state that renaming folders is not supported. You can move files into other folders that already exist.

Can I rename an AIOZ Storage bucket?
No. The docs say update actions, including renaming buckets, are not currently supported.

Why can't I delete my AIOZ Storage bucket?
A bucket can be deleted only when it is empty. Delete every object first, then delete the bucket from the Buckets page.

Can I recover a bucket after deleting it?
The docs say bucket deletion cannot be undone, so back up anything you need before you delete.

Can I download a whole folder from the dashboard?
No. The docs say downloading folders is not supported. A downloaded file is saved to your device's default download directory.

Are AIOZ Storage buckets public by default?
No. Buckets are private by default. Choosing Public and entering your passphrase gives a bucket a URL and a path.
